Does My Plumbing Company Actually Need a Website?
If your phone rings and your schedule stays full, it is fair to ask: why fix what is not broken?
Here is the honest answer: your referral network and Google Business profile are doing the heavy lifting right now. A website will not replace those. What it does is catch everyone else: the people who search at 11pm when something breaks, who do not have a trusted plumber in their contacts, who find you by accident and want to know if you are legit before they call.
The real cost of no website
When someone searches "plumber in Parma" and you do not have a site, two things happen:
- You do not show up in the results at all
- If you do show up (via Google Maps), there is nothing to click through to, and a blank profile sends a signal: small operation, maybe not around for long
The people most likely to search that way are new residents, people in emergency situations, and customers who have had a bad experience with another company and are starting fresh. That is actually a valuable pool of leads.
What a website does that Google Business cannot
Your Google Business profile tells people you exist and gives them your number. That is it.
A website can:
- Rank for service-specific searches ("water heater replacement Cleveland Heights", "drain cleaning near me")
- Walk a nervous customer through exactly what to expect when they call
- Show before/after photos that prove you do good work
- Present your pricing in a way that filters for the right customers
The referral multiplier
Here is something most contractors miss: a website makes your referrals convert better too.
Someone refers you to their neighbor. The neighbor Googles your name. If there is nothing there, or worse, a site that looks like it was built in 2009 and abandoned, some percentage of those referrals talk themselves out of calling. A clean, current site with your real face and a straightforward explanation of what you do is the difference between a referral who calls and one who moves on.
The bottom line
You do not need a website to survive. Plenty of good tradespeople get by without one. But if you want to grow without depending entirely on word of mouth, a well-built site is the most reliable investment you can make in your marketing.
At Code The Land we build websites for Cleveland plumbers starting at $2,800 flat rate. If you want to talk through whether it makes sense for your business, get in touch. We will tell you straight.
